We Were the Lucky Ones Book Review
Hello everyone and welcome back to the blog! Today, I am back with another book review. This year I have been trying to branch out to different genre's more. I have always loved historical fiction especially WWII historical fiction. This book first caught my eye when I learned it was going to be a Hulu TV Series. So, let's get into it!
This book follows the Kurc family as they try to survive the Nazi regime. Told from the perspective of all family members, we get to insight into what everyone endured before, during, and after the war. There are a lot of people that we follow, so in the beginning it was a little hard to keep track of who everyone was and their relationship to one another. We're talking mother, father, daughters, sons, in-laws, etc. It's a lot of information all at once. I think the short chapters really help in their instance because the more you see the names, the easier it is to learn who everyone is.
For a WWII book, this wasn't as somber as I initially thought. While the contents and the events are devastating, it was written in a way that provided hope to the reader. Plus, the title We Were the Lucky Ones does imply some hope.
Georgia Hunter provided snippets of history facts to try to orient the reader to major events going on in the world not just Europe. There is mention of SSR, America, South America, and Africa. This also helps because there were some events Hunter mentioned that I was not familiar with. It helps put everything into perspective, and helps the reader understand that things are getting worse in Europe.
Like I said above, this wasn't exactly what I was expecting. I was expecting more talk of Concentration Camps specifically, but this book showcased the other hardships people endured.
This was a really quick read for me because I do really find this genre and content interesting. Overall, I would give it 4/5 stars, and I would recommend if you share similar interests as me.
Alright folks, that is all I have for this week! Come back next Wednesday for another blog post! As always, thank you for reading:)
