The Unquiet Bones Book Review
Hello everyone and welcome back to the blog! Today, I am back with another book review. I've been on a thriller kick lately, and I'm so excited to talk about this one. So, let's get into it!
The Unquiet Bones by Loreth Anne White is about a decades old missing person cold case. The investigation is reignited when the bones of Annalise Jansen are found buried underneath a chapel. Investigator, Jane Munroe and her team must work to put the pieces together. A girl missing for over 20 years finally found...along with the boy who was claimed to have killed her. So who really did kill Annalise Jansen? Eyes turn to her group of friends dubbed the Shoreview Six. Members of this group were some of the last people to see Annalise alive, but no one was ever charged. Are they going to keep their story straight now? What would they do to keep their secrets hidden?
I have to say this book pleasantly surprised me. The ending was shocking; it was not something I expected. This book has all the makings of a great thriller: missing person found, suspicious group of friends, multiple suspects, a determined detective, and tons of secrets.
I flew through this book. I read it on my Kindle, and it was about 351 pages. The chapters weren't too long either. We also switch point of views from Jane, the detective, to each member of the Shoreview Six, and some other personalities as well. It was a very easy structure to follow.
By the end, I was just as determined to find out what happened as some of the characters were. I think the author did a really great job of writing how secrets can tear people apart, tear friendships apart. She did a great job of showing everyone's desperation to keep their story straight, to keep their secrets hidden.
In the first few pages, we are told that Jane's husband, Matt is missing. I believe he went on a camping trip and hasn't come back. I think this was an odd bit of information to add to the story. It's mentioned multiple times in the beginning chapters, but then we never hear about it until the end. I thought maybe it wrapped into the cold case somehow but it doesn't (sorry to spoil). I don't think it was really necessary to add this into the story. I feel like as the reader, I didn't gain any new insight from this information.
Other than that, I want to mention again the ending did really shock me. The twist at the end was not what I was expecting at all. I truly had to put my Kindle down and just soak it all in.
Overall, I would highly recommend checking this book out! I gave it 4/5 stars.
Alright folks, that is all for this week! Come back next Wednesday for another blog post. As always thank you for reading :)
