The House in the Pines Book Review
Hello everyone and welcome back to the blog! Today, I am back with another book review. I've been on a thriller kick lately, but I feel like the last couple have fallen short. So, let's get into it.
In The House in the Pines, we follow Maya. Maya is trying to get her life together, quit drugs, quit drinking, and try to solve her best friends murder. Especially after seeing a viral video of a woman dying just like her best friend did. The weird thing about the video is that Maya recognizes someone in it, and its the same person who was there when her friend died too. Realizing there has to be a connection, Maya comes back home to finally figure out what happened to her best friend.
I've seen this book on tiktok from time to time, and I've never heard anything bad about it. However, this wasn't as good as I thought it was going to be. I wasn't a fan of the twist. It also took me a really long time to get into this book. It felt like the first 100 pages were just going on and on with no real development.
There was a lot of telling instead of showing which I don't like. I don't want to read paragraph after paragraph of something I can just be shown through dialogue or something. I kept pushing through because I thought maybe the end would be worth it (it wasn't).
I initially rated this 3 stars but now I'm actually dropping my rating to 2 stars.
There wasn't enough twist in it for me, and the twist at the end was dumb in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, it was definitely unique but it wasn't executed well. Things were very confusing.
I also think the parts about Maya's dad and his writing didn't add anything necessary to the story. Those could've been cut, and the story still would've been fine.
Overall, the writing was fine, the story could've been better, the ending definitely could've been better, and for those reasons I give this 2/5 stars.
I wouldn't recommend either; there are better thrillers are there.
Alright folks, come back next Wednesday for another blog post! As always thank you for reading:)
