Something in the Water Book Review
Hello everyone, and welcome to Cover to Cover! Today, I am back with another book review. This book is a part of Reese’s book club; I’ve never read anything from her book club before. So, let’s get into it!
I want to start out by saying that this was nothing like what I thought it was going to be. To preface, this book is about a couple who go on their honeymoon to Bora Bora. While scuba diving a little far from the island, they find something. The couple then spends the rest of the book deciding what to do with what they find and how to cover their tracks. I know that’s very vague, but I don’t want to give away what they find in the water. Obviously.
But I thought they would find like a dead body or something—but no. Spoiler no dead body (kind of). So much for being vague right? Instead, this book presents the characters with the ultimate moral question. Do you or do you not? What could happen if you do? Can this thing be traced back to you? How far are you willing to go to cover your tracks? You get the picture.
Like I said, this book wasn’t at all what I thought it was going to be. I was expecting more of a thriller, but I wouldn’t say that this really fits into that genre. There is definitely suspense and major build-up. As the story went on, I honestly had no idea how it was going to end.
It was also a short read. A little over 350 pages which isn’t too bad. The chapters were also short as well which I feel like is always a plus.
I thought the main characters were interesting. I didn’t really care for the husband. He just seemed so sketchy the entire time, and I also didn’t feel connected to him in any way. He also came off as whiny which hard no. Get it together and act like an adult. On the other hand, I did like the wife because she at least thought about things. She thought about the long game they would be playing. But she could’ve stood up to the husband more. They also didn’t feel like a married couple. It was more like they were both at the wrong place at the wrong time and just had to stick it out together. Overall, they were tolerable.
The ending was kind of lackluster though. I didn’t feel some big sigh of relief after finding out what happened. It was just eh.
Overall, I would rate this a 3/5 stars. I didn’t realize how much I didn’t care for this book until I started writing this review. Unless, I am just missing the big picture, I felt let down. And it sucks because it was also a Reese’s book club pick, so I was expecting a lot. Maybe too much?
Alright, folks! That is all I have for this week, come back next Wednesday for another blog post! As always thank you for reading :)
