Middle of the Night Book Review
Hello everyone and welcome back to the blog! Today, I am back with another book review. A new Riley Sager book dropped in June, and I of course and to stop everything I was doing to read this. So, let's get into it.
Middle of the Night follows Ethan Marsh as he moves back into his childhood home where his best friend growing up disappeared right from his backyard. Ethan has spent the last 30 years thinking about his best friend, Billy, and his mysterious disappearance. To this day no one knows what happened. Ethan is plagued with nightmares from that day and is haunted more than ever now that he is back home.
I love Riley Sager's books. It has felt so long since I've read something new by him. While this one isn't my favorite, I still loved it.
Let's start with the things I didn't particularly like. This was heavily focused on ghosts and the paranormal, more so than his over books, and I just don't enjoy that as much as a true real thriller.
This also felt really predictable. I guessed exactly what happened to Billy. I was still on the edge of my seat because I was waiting for something unexpected to happen. I was expecting another twist within the last chapter, but we didn't get one.
I did like the author's note at the end. I love reading about author's writing processes. He basically goes into detail about how he got the idea and how he was able to turn it into a book. I thought it was really cool. This book is different from his others in terms of setting.
I also really liked the 90s vibe. It felt very much like a version of Stranger Things.
He also jumps from present to past. As you read, you learn more and more about the day Billy disappeared. You also get that day from the perspective of other characters. It was never confusing or hard to follow. It was clear we were jumping back and it was clear who's point of view you were in. This helped me progress through the book because obviously I want to know what happened.
Overall, if you're a fan of Riley Sager you'll like it a lot (maybe not as much as his other books, but you'll like it nonetheless). I would give this 4/5 stars, and I would highly recommend. This is a perfect summer thriller read for the beach.
Alright folks that is all I have for this week! Come back next Wednesday for another blog post! As always, thank you for reading:)
