How My Reading Taste Has Changed Over Time
Hello everyone and welcome back to the blog! If you read the title, then you know where this is going. Everyone has that one food they loved as a kid but don’t eat anymore, right? Why don’t you eat certain foods anymore? Maybe a traumatic experience, or maybe you just grew out of it. It’s the same concept with books, genres, authors, etc. So, let’s get into it!
Now, I know you may be thinking, “well, duh, I don’t read the same books. I read children's books when I was a child and now, I read young adult or adult…” Which is true. We’re not reading children's books on the daily to satisfy our reading needs. But even as a adult, my reading tastes have changed.
We all gravitate towards children’s books or small, small novels as kids. Eventually, we make our way out of the kiddie section and into the Young Adult (YA) section. And then to the Adult section. The characters in our books change too. I don’t want read about high schoolers dealing with high school drama; I would rather read about someone my age or at least close to me age with a 9-5 job meeting the love of her life in a New York coffee shop. Books with characters who are more relatable to me, their problems that are more relatable to me. The writing style from YA to Adult is also drastically different. Sometimes YA comes off as a little cringey to me.
I’m sure this is obvious that as we grow up things change, but sometimes it happens so fast you don’t even notice it right away. And then one day you’re just like, “Oh my god, how did I ever read something like this before?” I hardly even browse the YA section anymore. I’m mostly in the thriller or romance section.
But even the genres I gravitate towards are different then what they used to be. I used to really be into Fantasy, and I would only read a thriller every once in a while. Now, I love thrillers and have been more into romance or rom-com books.
I find it really interesting to look back at what I used to like as a kid versus what I like now. Reading is also not something I always loved. I hated reading until about 4th grade and ever since then I’ve been a big reader. (Honestly, I think it mostly had to do with the fact that I hated school in when I was younger). I remember my mom actually being shocked when I started to really like reading. My dad would always take my sister and I to the bookstore, and we’d get Starbucks and a book. I loved those days. And I would always have to have a book on me all throughout high school. If I didn’t have a book, I felt lost. On the flip side, I didn’t carry any books for pleasure in college. One, because I was an English major so I was already carrying a ton of heavy books. Second, since I did so much reading for school, I never wanted to pick up a book in my free time.
Anyways, I digress. I love what I’m reading now and maybe I will get into more fantasy or maybe I get into a new genre. Either way, I’m plenty happy reading all the thrillers and romances I can get my hands on now.
Alright, folks that is all for this week! Come back next Wednesday for another blog post! As always thank you for reading :)
