A Killing Cold Review
Hello everyone and welcome back to the blog! Today, I am back with another book review. Kate Alice Marshall is a repeat author for me, and I loved her previous thrillers. So, let's get into it!
A Killing Cold follows Theo Scott as she travels with her fiancé, Connor Dalton, to his family's resort for the holidays. Before arriving, Theo received multiple text messages from an unknown number telling her not to come and to not trust Connor or his family. Theo has secrets of her own she has to protect, but she needs Connor's family to accept her. Especially when her and Connor have only known each other for three months.
One of my favorite types of books are winter thrillers. However, this book fell really flat for me. As we are introduced to the Dalton family, it became hard to keep track of everyone and their relationship within the family. There are also multiple flashbacks written in a different POV that were sometimes confusing to follow especially towards the end. Sometimes the flashbacks were separated to signal a time jump and other times they were not. I think it should've been consistent throughout.
I thought the enigma of Theo was repetitive. Statements like, I don't know who I am, we know who you really are, she has secrets, I don't even know you, etc. We get it. You're unreliable, you're lying to your fiancé, the family doesn't like or trust you, etc.
This was only 289 pages, so very short in my opinion, and I think there could've been more character development for certain family members. Like the grandmother, the mother, Uncle Nick.
When the big reveal was happening, I had to re-read a lot of it because I couldn't remember who was involved with who. Plus, it was one of these reveals where it's like, "It wasn't her, it was me who did it. No actually, this is what happened." Which is usually fine, but that happened way too many times in this book. I got to the point where I really didn't care what happened because I wasn't attached to the characters.
Overall, I give this 2/5 stars. This was my least favorite Kate Alice Marshall book. If you're looking for a good thriller I recommend reading What Lies in the Woods or No One Can Know by her. Reviews linked.
Alright folks, that is all I have for today! Come back next Wednesday for another blog post. As always, thank you for reading:)
